How to use Google Search to prepare for Halloween: costume, makeup, events, playlist and movies

Google suggests using AI-powered Search features to quickly pick a costume, makeup, free local events, music and movies for Halloween.

Tools

A costume from what you already have

If you have no costume and don't want to spend money on one, you can use Lens in Google Search. Lay a few items from your wardrobe on a bed, take a photo and ask something like: "Help me come up with ideas for a DIY Halloween costume using these items from my closet".

For costume ideas there is also Google's annual Frightgeist site. It shows which costumes are most popular across the country and what is trending in your neighborhood.

Trying on makeup before the party

Before you buy face paint, you can preview the look. In the Google app for Android or iOS, tap the Lens camera icon in the search bar, then select "Create" at the bottom of the screen. Take a selfie and type a request such as: "I want to do unicorn makeup for Halloween. Show me what would stand out at a party without being too hard to replicate". You can then ask which products you need.

Free events nearby

If you're on a budget, ask AI Mode in Search to find free activities in your area. According to Google, it can suggest costume swaps, community and neighborhood festivals, creative workshops and other events.

A playlist for the party

To set the mood, you can connect your YouTube Music account to Search and ask AI Mode to make a playlist. Google gives this example request: "Make a spooky background playlist for a Halloween party that moves from eerie ambient synth at dinner to upbeat retro horror-funk for when the party gets going".

A scary movie watchlist

If you want a movie marathon but don't know what to watch, use AI Mode. Google suggests this request: "Help me make a 90s nostalgia Halloween movie watchlist. I like witchy aesthetics, small-town autumn settings, and practical effects but without heavy gore". This narrows your options to a list that fits your mood.
