Google uses AI to speed up the search for new antimicrobial peptides
Google DeepMind says its Google Antigravity for Science tool is helping speed up the search for new antimicrobial peptides.
What happened
Google DeepMind wrote in its blog that its Google Antigravity for Science tool is being used to accelerate the search for novel antimicrobial peptides.
This again shows how AI can help scientists in laboratory research.
What antimicrobial peptides are
Antimicrobial peptides are small molecules made of protein chains. They occur naturally in living organisms and can fight microorganisms such as bacteria.
Scientists are looking for new peptides because bacteria's resistance to common antibiotics is becoming an increasingly serious problem.
Why it matters
Searching for new substances in the lab can take a very long time. If AI helps narrow down the list of candidates, researchers can move to testing faster.
For now, this is research work. Getting from a lab result to medicines available at a pharmacy usually takes a lot of time and several stages of testing.
