Trusting an AI agent may make you an easier target for phishing
According to a Futurism headline, using an AI agent may make people more vulnerable to scam emails that try to trick them into giving up passwords or money.
What it's about
Futurism published an article with a worrying conclusion: people who use AI agents may be more likely to fall for phishing emails. Phishing is a scam in which you receive a message pretending to be from a bank, email provider, store, or another familiar organization, in order to make you click a suspicious link or enter your password.
An AI agent is a program based on artificial intelligence that can carry out tasks for you on its own: sorting email, replying to messages, searching for information, or logging into various services. That is why such tools can create a false sense of security.
Why this matters for ordinary people
When a program reads emails and takes actions on its own, a person may check each message less carefully. It seems that the 'assistant' has already checked everything, and this can become a weak spot.
It is important to remember that an AI agent does not replace your attention. Before you click a link or enter your details, it is worth checking the sender's address, any unnecessary urgency in the email, and whether you were expecting such a message.
What you can do right now
Do not give an AI agent access to all your accounts unless it is necessary. To log in to your bank and other important services, it is better to go there directly rather than through a link in an email.
Turn on two-factor authentication wherever it is available. If an email seems strange, contact the organization using an official phone number or website that you find yourself.
